Trump Says US Close to Iran Nuclear Deal, Tehran Responds With Criticism
By The Media Line Staff
US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Washington is “very close” to finalizing a nuclear agreement with Iran, suggesting that Tehran has “sort of” agreed to the terms under discussion.
“We’re in very serious negotiations with Iran for long-term peace,” Trump told reporters during a tour of Gulf states, according to a pooled report shared by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
His comments come on the heels of fresh US-Iran nuclear talks held in Oman on Sunday. Officials said the session ended without a breakthrough but that additional rounds are planned, despite ongoing tensions and stark differences over uranium enrichment and regional policy.
While both Tehran and Washington have publicly affirmed their preference for diplomacy, negotiators face entrenched disagreements over red-line issues that have derailed past attempts to revive or replace the 2015 nuclear deal, which the Trump administration withdrew from in 2018.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded to Trump’s latest statements, accusing the US of hypocrisy and warmongering. “Trump thinks he can sanction and threaten us and then talk of human rights,” Pezeshkian said Thursday. “All the crimes and regional instability are caused by them (the United States).”
