(SRN NEWS) – The government of Greece wants to ban men from having children via surrogacy if they are single or in a same-sex relationship. The justice ministry says it needs to eliminate legal ambiguity over the concept of inability to carry a pregnancy. The proposed change in law will be submitted to the Greek parliament soon as part of broader civil code reform. Greece legalized gay marriage last year — the first Orthodox Christian-majority country to do so. The marriage equality act was opposed by the Orthodox Church and conservative groups.
A federal judge has ruled that a long-dormant 1985 state law in Nevada — requiring parents to be notified before a minor undergoes an abortion — can be enforced. U.S. District Court Judge Anne Traum says that the 40-year-old statute can take effect on April 30th. However, she also left open the possibility for abortion advocates to seek a court order blocking its reinstatement while they challenge the law’s constitutionality. Abortions in Nevada are legal until 24 weeks, with exceptions to save a mother’s life or to protect her health.
The federal government has paused nearly 28 million dollars for Planned Parenthood chapters and other organizations that provide abortions. The Trump administration is investigating whether those groups are complying with the law. The Department of Health and Human Services has declined to say which laws or executive orders the organizations are being investigated for violating, though it’s being reported that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs are at issue. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion business.
California lawmakers have rejected bills that would have prevented males from competing against females in school sports. Democrats on the state Assembly’s Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports and Tourism voted down two proposals by Republican lawmakers after hours of impassioned debate. The leading measure would have required the California Interscholastic Federation to adopt rules banning students who are male from participating on a girls school sports team. It would have applied to K-though-12 and college students.
